Sometime back I wrote a post about Are Indian Software Developers “Code Donkeys”? . Soon after writing this post I became more active in stackoverflow and started seeing lot of “worst” questions. Almost 80% of the questions are from Indian Developers. This made me think “Are Indian Software Engineers really Code Donkeys?” Don’t believe me? Check out the below questions

1. Give real life examples of Queues?

Answer :

2. I need a free php-ajax enabled contact us form script and mail should come in gmail inbox not spam folder?

I need not tell you why this question is stupid.

3. How can I assign the same IP address to 2 computers on the same network?

Same IP to two computers? That breaks the reason for us to use IP address. I seriously think he should not be coding if don’t know the basics?

4. give the source code in c graphics to show circuit and functions of tri state logic

For your information we don’t sell code in stackoverflow.

5. Browser compatibility problem

And the question goes like this

hi i created a web page , in that the menus are proper in Google chrome and in Mozila Firefox, What should i do for recovering ..

Recovering what? If both works fine then whats the issue? What menu? What programming language? What is the error?

6. what is meant by cloud computing? give some examples

Never heard about Google or Bing?

7. Can someone send me the JAVA LDAP code to connect and to search/modify in a directory server

Stackoverflow is for learning new things and coding better and not for exchanging code.

8. I need finishing my ocaml assignment.

We are not here to do your homework.

Not enough? Just check out more here : http://stackoverflow.com/questions?page=7627&sort=votes . Look for Indian Names.

Update : TweetMyMac is available for download now. More details here : http://themacbox.co.uk/tweetmymac/

Downloads for TweetMyPC crossed 2000 yesterday. This is 10 times more than the Twitter application which I released about 6 months back. Thanks to everyone who Tweeted and blogged about TweetMyPC . I am receiving lot of emails asking about the new version. Here is the list of planned additions and changes to TweetMyPC version 2. I have fixed few bugs as well.

Commands are no more case sensitive : Yes Shutdown and shutdown does the same job

Replies : TweetMyPC will reply to you after a command is executed. Replies will be in the form of Tweets. Below is a screenshot of how the reply will look for “lock” command

lock : This command locks your Windows pc

physical memory : As the name says, this command will let you know the Physical Memory of your pc

virtual memory : Want to know the virtual memory of your pc? Just tweet virtual memory

os : This is one of the command which does not have much value. Tweeting os will make TweetMyPC to tweet about your OS version.

ip : Know your pc’s ip from anywhere in the world with this command

standby : Don’t want to shutdown? then make you pc go to standby mode with this command.

hibernate : hibernate your pc with a tweet.

screenshot : Want to know what is happening in your pc when you are not around? Just tweet screenshot and TweetMyPC will take a screenshot of your desktop and post it to Twitpic. Below is a screenshot of how the reply will look like.

getprocesslist : This is one of the very useful command. On receiving this command TweetMyPC will generate a list of running programs, along with the process ID, and email it to a predefined email address.

kill <process id> : This is used along with the above command. Once you recive the process list you can close a program using the kill command.

download <url> : Want to download an intresting video but you are on the move? don’t worry just tweet download followed by the download url and TweetMyPC will download it for you and it will be ready when you return back. Note: Twitter automatically converts long urls into short one using bit.ly. TweetMyPC can download files only if the url is in the short form. Please use bit.ly to shorten your url before posting.

getfile <filepath> : Missed an important document and you are travelinlg some where? No problem. Just tweet get followed by the file path and TweetMyPC will email the file as attachment to a predefined email. Don’t know the path? dont worry. Just checkout the next command.

getfilelist <drive> : This command will make TweetMyPC to send you the list of files and folders in a drive. You can use this command to email you a file once you know the complete path of the file.

Custom Command : This is the most interesting feature of TweetMyPC. Do you think the above command are not enough? then create your own custom command. You can choose a command and then chose a file to run. For example you can choose a command winamp and make TweetMyPC to run winamp by tweeting winamp.

I am sure there will be lot of questions about security and privacy issues. I will be explaining in detail once I release the new version. So dont forget to subscribe to this blog via email to or rss feed to keep you updated. in the mean time if you have any suggestions and comments dont forget to let me know through email : shobankr[at]gmail.com or follow me in Twitter. Thanks for the beer

Update: Why Gmail (Only)? . We tested the app with many email providers and Gmail was the only one which worked in most of the PCs.

Hi,

I’m the Program Manager for CodePlex. Just wanted to drop a quick note to say i’ve been enjoying reading all of the tweets about your project. It’s definitely an interesting project.

I’m doing a talk on CodePlex at TechEd next week and I’m going to mention your project to show a sampling of the various projects we host. I am curious what’s the actual scenario for shutting down or rebooting your PC remotely? Or is it just more to show what you can do with twitter?

Thanks!

F# developed as a research programming language to provide the much sought-after combination of type safety, succinctness, performance, expresivity and scripting, with all the advantages of running on a high-quality, well-supported modern runtime system. This combination has been so successful that the language is now being transitioned towards a fully supported language on the .NET platform. Some of the reasons for this move are that F# gives you:

succinct, type-inferred functional programming,

interactive scripting like Python and other languages,

the foundations for an interactive data visualization environment,

the combination of type inference and safety, like that of ML,

a cross-compiling core shared with the popular OCaml language,

a performance profile like that of C#,

easy access to the entire range of powerful .NET libraries and database tools,

a foundational simplicity with similar roots to Scheme,

the option of a top-rate Visual Studio integration, which is usable with the freely available Visual Studio 2008 Shell

the experience of a first-class team of language researchers with a track record of delivering high-quality implementations,

the speed of native code execution on the concurrent, portable, and distributed .NET Framework.
