TweetMyPC – What next?

Update : TweetMyMac is available for download now. More details here : http://themacbox.co.uk/tweetmymac/

Downloads for TweetMyPC crossed 2000 yesterday. This is 10 times more than the Twitter application which I released about 6 months back. Thanks to everyone who Tweeted and blogged about TweetMyPC ;-) . I am receiving lot of emails asking about the new version. Here is the list of planned additions and changes to TweetMyPC version 2. I have fixed few bugs as well.

  1. Commands are no more case sensitive : Yes Shutdown and shutdown does the same job ;-)
  2. Replies : TweetMyPC will reply to you after a command is executed. Replies will be in the form of Tweets. Below is a screenshot of how the reply will look for “lock” commandlock
  3. lock : This command locks your Windows pc
  4. physical memory : As the name says, this command will let you know the Physical Memory of your pc
  5. virtual memory : Want to know the virtual memory of your pc? Just tweet virtual memory
  6. os : This is one of the command which does not have much value. Tweeting os will make TweetMyPC to tweet about your OS version.
  7. ip : Know your pc’s ip from anywhere in the world with this command
  8. standby : Don’t want to shutdown? then make you pc go to standby mode with this command.
  9. hibernate : hibernate your pc with a tweet.
  10. screenshot : Want to know what is happening in your pc when you are not around? Just tweet screenshot and TweetMyPC will take a screenshot of your desktop and post it to Twitpic. Below is a screenshot of how the reply will look like.screenshot
  11. getprocesslist : This is one of the very useful command. On receiving this command TweetMyPC will generate a list of running programs, along with the process ID, and email it to a predefined email address.
  12. kill <process id> : This is used along with the above command. Once you recive the process list you can close a program using the kill command.
  13. download <url> : Want to download an intresting video but you are on the move? don’t worry just tweet download followed by the download url and TweetMyPC will download it for you and it will be ready when you return back. Note: Twitter automatically converts long urls into short one using bit.ly. TweetMyPC can download files only if the url is in the short form. Please use bit.ly to shorten your url before posting.
  14. getfile <filepath> : Missed an important document and you are travelinlg some where? No problem. Just tweet get followed by the file path and TweetMyPC will email the file as attachment to a predefined email. Don’t know the path? dont worry. Just checkout the next command.
  15. getfilelist <drive> : This command will make TweetMyPC to send you the list of files and folders in a drive. You can use this command to email you a file once you know the complete path of the file.
  16. Custom Command : This is the most interesting feature of TweetMyPC. Do you think the above command are not enough? then create your own custom command. You can choose a command and then chose a file to run. For example you can choose a command winamp and make TweetMyPC to run winamp by tweeting winamp.

I am sure there will be lot of questions about security and privacy issues. I will be explaining in detail once I release the new version.  So dont forget to subscribe to this blog via email to or rss feed to keep you updated. in the mean time if you have any suggestions and comments dont forget to let me know through email : shobankr[at]gmail.com or follow me in Twitter. Thanks for the beer ;-)

Update: Why Gmail (Only)? . We tested the app with many email providers and Gmail was the only one which worked in most of the PCs.

    Looking forward to review the new one.

    @Shoban

    Happy to hear that but i a new error just occurred, an error message i can’t remember exactly but it says that i my account info isn’t matched or wrong even I’m sure that they are, sometimes the error message popes although the program from the beginning accepted my info

    A Suggestion :

    status bar or label to show my status wither i’m connected or not, able to receive commands,etc

    Thanks for your effort and good luck with the new version ;)

    Excellent! I’m waiting for the new release to test it out!

  14. June 4th, 2009 at 15:00 | #14

    Not working under Vista? In properties I have set the program to run as admin mode and although the software can run, and even remember my twitter password, it does not respond to any commands….

    What OS are you running this software on? I would assume that because it is 2009, one would expect it to run under vista? I am also not happy to run a network utility like this under administrator context. It is just wrong…..

    Unable to run the 2.0 version on Windows 7 x64. A box comes up that just says “TweetMyPC has stopped working”. I’ve tried running in compatibility and get the same error. I suspect this is a problem with x64 ?

  16. June 8th, 2009 at 22:09 | #16

    @Martijn Wismeijer
    I tested the app with Xp, Vista and Windows 7. Twitter ha API limits and sometimes TweetMyPC may not respond in the next minute but it should process the comment after 1/2 minutes.

  17. June 8th, 2009 at 22:10 | #17

    @Mike Martin
    TweetMyPC has issues with 64bit OS. I will try to fix it in the next version. Thanks for the comment.

    Nice app, guys! One thing…Custom commands was a great start, but can we have 1) support for selecting .bat files and 2) command line arguments?

    This would be even more killer if I could execute commands like “ccleaner /auto” or a PowerShell script.

    @Lee Mathews
    Thanks for the suggestion lee. I will surely consider it for the next version. ;-)

    1st I would like to congratulate for this great utility.
    I have 2 minor problems :

    1.Sometimes there is problem to login.

    2.How can I make custom commands.
    Thanks

  21. June 23rd, 2009 at 19:27 | #21

    @Dip this may be because of the API limit. Are you using any other Twitter client?

    Custom commands can be created using the menu item.

    If the PC on which this is installed, has gone into sleep mode, how can i set a command to wake it up with tweetmypc?

    I am unable to get this to login to twitter via the credentials I am supplying. Does this program work if I’m on a proxy (like when I’m at work)?

    only os command is getting a response
    All other commands go unanswered. Am I doing something wrong?

    Is there an alternative for LINUX?

    July 15th, 2009 at 09:58 | #27

    I’m sure is it my computer or I did something wrong.
    When I click Save and Close, a window pops up and say “Failed to Login to Twitter with the value supplied. Please check your login details.” I am sure that I typed in the right thing.
    Another I want to ask is when using the get file command do I need the ?

  28. July 16th, 2009 at 01:07 | #28

    @Krishna . Yes it will work even if your updates are protected. Better way to use TweetMyPC is by using protected updates.

  29. July 16th, 2009 at 01:08 | #29

    @mak What about shutdown, restarts etc?

  30. July 16th, 2009 at 01:08 | #30

    No! TweetMyPC is available only for Windows now.

  31. July 30th, 2009 at 03:19 | #31

    Another suggestion…multiple computers? I know I could make different accounts per computer but for simplicity something like:
    shutdown %COMPUTERNAME%

    Of course I’m sure it’s not that easy to implement but I would sure enjoy it…and if so, don’t forget to include an %ALL variable please!

    My goal is to have all servers/clients I service able to be rebooted via your slick app…amongst other things!

    I am currently writing up a guide on this..

    Do you have a “cheat-sheet” of commands that can be used?

    I’m running Vista and have found the following (my tweets are protected),

    Shutdown = works (iPhone Twitter client “Tweetie”)
    Shutdown = does not work (Twitter web interface)
    Reboot = does not work (Twitter web interface)
    physical memory = does not work (Twitter web interface)
    virtual memory = does not work (Twitter web interface)
    os = does not work (Twitter web interface)
    ip = does not work (Twitter web interface)
    ip = does not work (Twitter web interface)

    .. it seems the web interface does not work if you are running vista.

    Hello

    I have found a way to get this to work with Windows Vista, and also compiled this into a guide.

    Hello from China!
    You know for some reasons, we people here can’t log on to twitter directly. Can you guys add a feature that can use twitter api, or third-part website like itweet?
    Thanks for your excellent work!

    A great feature could be to use the computer web-camera to stream live-video by demand.
    That way, when you are on a vacation, you can check if everything is o:k in your house.
    Checking your child at home could be great as-well.

    The question: which online (live-streaming) service can be used to that purpose.. ?

  41. September 6th, 2009 at 14:39 | #41

    @Mark

    I agree, this is a great tool which can be used for live video streaming.

    I have done a guide on how to Stream Live Video on Twitter on my blog that may be of interest http://thesocialmediaguide.com.au/2009/07/29/stream-live-video-on-twitter/

    Hello, I am really hoping I can get some help. I’ve installed TweetMyPC on five machines across three different networks (all XP Pro, latest updates and service packs) and have had absolutely no success with the app. It installs and launches, I fill in the details of the Twitter accounts I’ve created for each machine, and then… nothing. I have set my primary Twitter account to follow the TMPC accounts and vice-versa, and I’ve sent commands from the above list to the TMPC accounts, and nothing ever happens. The only response I’ve been able to get from the app at all comes when I mistype a Twitter password into the TMPC config dialog.

    I see that lots of people get this working but I am having zero success.

    Please let me know what specific information you need to help troubleshoot. If I can get it working I will spread the word far and wide, because it will make my work a whole lot more manageable.
